Despite being in the shadow of Norwegian top scorer Erling Haaland, the 23-year-old Argentine managed to score 10 goals in 33 games in all competitions during his first English season.

Alvarez played a very influential role at the end of last year in leading Argentina to its first world title since 1986, scoring four goals in the Qatari World Cup, including two in the semi-final against Croatia.

And British media reported that City raised the wages of the former River Plate player, in recognition of his talent, in order to extend the contract he previously signed for an additional year.

City quoted the Argentine as saying in a statement, “It is a moment of great pride for me and my family. For a club like City to put their trust in me in this way, it is wonderful.”

He continued, “I am very satisfied with my first season here, but I still have a lot (to progress). I know that I can improve and City will give me everything I need in order to achieve my capabilities.”
