Javier Fortuna wishes Ryan Garcia speedy recovery: “There are things more important than fighting”
With Ryan Garcia announcing he is withdrawing from his scheduled July 9 fight with Javier Fortuna, a lot of questions went out after Garcia’s vague Instagram post saying he would be focusing on his health and well-being.
Dan Rafael of The Ring followed up with Sampson Lewkowicz, Fortuna’s promoter, and Lewkowicz said he was told it was a mental health issue.
Fortuna and Lewkowicz have officially sent out well wishes to Garcia (21-0, 18 KO), with Fortuna saying he hopes they can reschedule when Ryan is ready.
“I wish Ryan Garcia a speedy recovery,” said Fortuna. “There are things more important than fighting and I hope he is able to quickly recover. We can reschedule our fight for a time when I can face and beat a 100% prepared version of Ryan Garcia.”
Fortuna (36-2-1, 25 KO) isn’t sure if he’ll fight a different opponent on July 9 or what exactly will be next for him, but he and Lewkowicz are on the same page about Garcia’s withdrawal.
“At the end of the day, your health is what truly matters,” added Lewkowicz. “I commend Ryan Garcia for having the courage to admit he needs to focus on his life away from the ring. We will be ready to reschedule when he is and our whole team wishes him well.”
