MM 7.13: Maryland baseball’s Lance Williams and Brayden Martin selected in 2026 MLB Draft
A pair of Maryland baseball’s brightest stars got their flowers Sunday, as Lance Williams and Brayden Martin were both selected on the second day of the 2026 MLB Draft.Williams was the first Terp off the board — he was selected in the eighth round as the 247th pick by the Chicago Cubs, the same organization where former Maryland standout Matt Shaw is rostered. Williams posted solid numbers in his lone College Park season after transferring from East Carolina following his freshman campaign, striking out 69 batters in 57 innings pitched. While his 6.16 ERA may be cause for concern, the pitcher only allowed three earned runs in his last seven appearances.AdvertisementMartin, on the other hand, was selected in the 11th round with the 342nd pick by the Toronto Blue Jays. He made a name for himself by mastering the art of walking, recording a program-high 145 walks in his three years at Maryland. He also performed at an elite level with the bat, averaging .314 and logging a .455 on-base percentage during his collegiate career. The duo’s solid production failed to save the terps from what was otherwise a disappointing season. Maryland finished 15th in the Big Ten with a 9-21 conference record. This offseason remains one of immense importance for head coach Matt Swope as he looks to guide the Terps up the conference leaderboard. In other newsMaryland football offensive lineman Amory Hills earned the eighth-highest PFF pass-blocking grade among all qualified Division 1 linemen. Maryland football earned the commitment of three-star class of 2027 edge rusher Dallas Pauldo.
